چکیده

Wetlands are land areas that are wet during part or all of the year. Constructed wetlands are man-made systems that mimic the functions of natural wetlands applied for wastewater treatment. The aim of this research is to investigate the feasibility of using a constructed wetland for treatment of kitchen waste water from hostel mess. The wetland plant species grown in the constructed wetland is Phragmites australis. The sampling took place monthly for a period of six months at both inlet and outlet. The parameters analyzed are Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Total Nitrogen (TN), Total Phosphorus (TP), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Hydrogen Ion Concentration (pH.) The concentrations of TSS, TDS, TN, TP, BOD, and COD in the influent when the student strength was high increased by 29%, 32%, 361%, 699%, 21%, and 51%, respectively, as compared to low student strength case and decreased by 25%, 10%, 276%, 292%, 27%, and 53%, respectively, during rainfall periods. The integrated constructed wetland system reduces the concentrations of TSS, TDS, TN, TP, BOD, and COD by 41%, 4%, 76%, 77%, 75% and 36%, respectively, on an average.

Removal of Pharmaceutical Products in a Constructed Wetland

Background: There is growing interest in the natural and constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment. While nutrient removal in wetlands has been extensively investigated, information regarding the degradation of the pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) has only recently been emerging. PPCPs are widely distributed in urban wastewaters and can be removed to some extent by the con...

Anammox enrichment and constructed wetland inoculation for improvement of wastewater treatment performance

This study contributes to the improvement of low-cost biotechnology for wastewater treatment in constructed wetlands (CWs). Constructed wetlands are energy efficient engineered systems that mimic the treatment processes of natural wetlands, removing polluting organic matter, nutrients, and pathogens from water. The aim of this study was to investigate the advisability of the inoculation of hori...

Study the Performance of Hybrid Constructed Wetland with Pumice Substrate and Vetiver Plants in Urban Wastewater Treatment

One of the ways to reduce the amount of wastewater pollution is the use of constructed wetlands. In this research, the performance of a hybrid constructed wetland with pumice ore and vetiver plant on urban wastewater has been investigated. Hybrid wetlands with these specifications were constructed in the vicinity of wastewater treatment at the Isfahan University of Technology. To evaluate the p...

Removal of heavy metals from wastewater by a constructed wetland system at Egerton University, Kenya

The use of constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment has been proposed as an intermediate technological solution for handling wastewater. The aim of the study was to assess the efficiency of a constructed wetland at Egerton University, Kenya for heavy metals removal from wastewater. The wetland has been used for tertiary treatment of effluent from waste stabilization ponds system since 2007...
